Hugh Edmeades is one of the world’s most experienced auctioneers. He has conducted more than 2,500 auctions across the globe including international fine art, classic cars and for charity.
Edmeades was appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take over from Richard Madley as IPL auctioneer. However, he collapsed on stage during a two-day mega auction in Bengaluru earlier this year.

Hugh Edmeades
Hugh Edmeades is an independent fine art, vintage automobile, and charity auctioneer. He has conducted more than 2,500 auctions globally and has sold paintings by Old Masters, Impressionists, and Contemporary artists, as well as beautiful furniture and Chinese ceramics.
He has also conducted auctions for international charity fundraisers, including those to raise PS97 million for charitable trusts. He has travelled around the world to conduct auctions in Dubai, Hong Kong, Casablanca, New York, Mumbai, Monte Carlo, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
The 62-year-old Britisher collapsed midway through the IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru, courtesy of a condition known as Postural Hypotension or low blood pressure. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention and veteran broadcaster Charu Sharma carried on with auction proceedings until the end of Day 1.
Having recovered from his fall, Hugh Edmeades is ready to oversee the IPL 2023 mini-auction in Kochi on Friday. He will use his’special’ brass gavel for the event, which has 405 cricketers registered with 87 slots available to the 10 franchises.

One of the most memorable events in IPL history was when auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed on stage while bidding for Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. The auction was halted as a result, but it is said that Edmeades recovered from his health scare.
He was replaced by Charu Sharma for the remainder of the auction. The IPL released a press release on Sunday morning saying that Edmeades “had an unfortunate fall due to Postural Hypotension” but is now stable. The IPL also claimed that its televised player auction was a “success”. It even went as far as to slap a ‘best seller’ t-shirt on the occasion!
IPL 2022
After a long gap, the auctioneer Hugh Edmeades finally returned to the IPL 2022 auction podium. His heartfelt return was a treat for the cricket fans as well.
The IPL Auctions were conducted in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13 with all ten teams in search of the best players for their squads. A total of 590 cricketers are up for auction, with 370 Indians and 220 overseas players on the list.
On Day 1, the RCB made some smart purchases. They bought the renowned spinner Faf du Plessis for INR 7 crore and also pushed for Wanindu Hasaranga and Harshal Patel.
But they lacked firepower when it came to batting reserves. Their X-factor player was the Singapore international Tim David who scored 19 sixes for Multan Sultans in Pakistan Super League.
But they have now reverted to their normal strategy of buying the top players in their respective markets and looking for back-up in other areas. Despite that, they will be in for a tough time against the likes of Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals.
IPL 2023
The IPL 2023 auction is set to take place on December 23 in Kochi. Hugh Edmeades, who was the auctioneer in last year’s IPL mega auction, has returned to oversee this mini-auction.
The auction will see a total of 405 players go under the hammer for the 87 slots that remain open for each team. This year’s auction isn’t as big as the last one, but it still has a lot to offer.
Among the players who are up for grabs in this year’s auction are Australia’s Cameron Green, England’s Ben Stokes and Sam Curran. The latter has a chance to become the most expensive player in the auction, as he is currently performing well.
The auction has also seen a few changes to the list. Kane Williamson, for example, has a base price of INR 2 crore while Abhimanyu Easwaran has moved from Set 8 to 7.
